As he embarks on a new analysis of the history of the Seleucids, Professor Wolski does not follow the old method, which viewed every fragment of history as a separate whole. The Seleucid state was a continuation of the monarchy of Alexander the Great and of the Achaemenids before him, and it inherited from its predecessors all its obstinate troubles. Impressed by Alexander the Great’s campaign, the historians overlooked the obvious truth that the conquest itself could not have resolved all the pervasive problems that haunted the Achaemenid state. And then, the Achaemenids’ Asian heirs, the Seleucids, were faced by many new challenges. One aspect that has so far been taken little notice of was the resistance of the local population. The book sheds new light on the history of the fall of the Seleucid monarchy.

Monarchia Seleucydów była kontynuatorką monarchii Aleksandra Wielkiego, a przed nim Achemenidów, dziedzicząc po nich wszystkie bolączki, które ją trapiły. Wyprawy i podbój przez Aleksandra Wielkiego nie mógł wpłynąć na rozwikłanie wszystkich ujemnych zjawisk nurtujących monarchię Achemenidów. A ich spadkobiercy na terenie azjatyckim, Seleucydzi, stanęli wobec wielu nowych problemów. Zjawiskiem, które w nauce mało dotąd dostrzegano, był opór ludności miejscowej. Książka przedstawia w nowym świetle dzieje upadku monarchii Seleucydów.
